Fossil Record The cyanobacteria have an extensive fossil record. The oldest known fossils, in fact, are cyanobacteria from Archaean rocks of western Australia, dated 3. This may be somewhat surprising, since the oldest rocks are only a little older: Cyanobacteria are among the easiest microfossils to recognize. Morphologies in the group have remained much the same for billions of years, and they may leave chemical fossils behind as well, in the form of breakdown products from pigments. Small fossilized cyanobacteria have been extracted from Precambrian rock, and studied through the use of SEM and TEM scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Pictured above are two kinds cyanobacteria from the Bitter Springs chert of central Australia, a site dating to the Late Proterozoic, about million years old. On the left is a colonial chroococcalean form, and on the right is the filamentous Palaeolyngbya. Many Proterozoic oil deposits are attributed to the activity of cyanobacteria, such as Gloeocapsomorpha.

For example, rock layers show the sequence of geological events, and the presence and amount of radioactive elements in rocks make it possible to determine their ages. Analyses of rock formations and the fossil record are used to establish relative ages. In an undisturbed column of rock, the youngest rocks are at the top, and the oldest are at the bottom.

One of the very foundations of evolution and popular science today is the “geologic column. Although not found in all locations and although it varies in thickness as well as the numbers of layers present, this column can be found generally over the entire globe. Many of its layers can even be found on top of great mountains – such as Mt.
Everest and the American Rockies. In some places, such as the mile deep Grand Canyon, the layers of the column have been revealed in dramatic display. Certainly the existence of the column and its layered nature is quite clear, but what does it mean? Is it really a record of millions and even billions of years of Earth’s history?
What about the fact that the “simple” organisms are buried in the lower levels and the more “complicated” ones are buried in the higher levels? Doesn’t this fact support the notion that simple organisms evolved into more and more complex organisms over time, with the more complex organisms buried and fossilized above the earlier and simpler life forms?
Certainly this seems like a very logical assumption.

Its energy is found in fossil fuels as well as all living things. There is a great deal of information and enthusiasm today about the development and increased production of our global energy needs from alternative energy sources. Solar energy, wind power and moving water are all traditional sources of alternative energy that are making progress.
The enthusiasm everyone shares for these developments has in many ways created a sense of complacency that our future energy demands will easily be met. Alternative energy is an interesting concept when you think about it. In our global society, it simply means energy that is produced from sources other than our primary energy supply: Coal, oil and natural gas are the three kinds of fossil fuels that we have mostly depended on for our energy needs, from home heating and electricity to fuel for our automobiles and mass transportation.
The problem is fossil fuels are non-renewable. They are limited in supply and will one day be depleted. There is no escaping this conclusion. In fact, the earliest known fossil fuel deposits are from the Cambrian Period about million years ago, way before the dinosaurs emerged onto the scene. This is when most of the major groups of animals first appeared on Earth. The later fossil fuels — which provide more substandard fuels like peat or lignite coal soft coal — began forming as late as five million years ago in the Pliocene Period.
At our rate of consumption, these fuels cannot occur fast enough to meet our current or future energy demands.

The burial of these organisms also meant the burial of the carbon that they contained, leading to formation of our coal, oil and natural gas deposits. As the rate of C14 formation is independent from the levels of normal carbon, the drop in available C12 would not have reduced the rate of C14 production. Even if the rate of C14 formation had not increased after the Flood, there would have been a fundamental shift in the ratio towards a relatively higher radiocarbon content.
The amount of C14 present in the pre-flood environment is also limited by the relatively short time less than years which had elapsed between Creation and the Flood. Even if one is generous and allows for the current rate of C14 production to have ocurred throughout this period, the maximum amount of C14 in existence then is less than a fourth of the amount present today.

Holding the record for Earth’s earliest-known remnant of life is about as tough as keeping the crown in Game of Thrones. It seems like every few years, the victor is being usurped by some more ancient and impressive find. For a while there, the oldest known evidence for life was a 3. This particular stromatolite was found in the Pilbara region of Western Australia in , and for several years it wore the crown for the oldest-known fossil in the world.
It wasn’t long, however, before a formidable competitor was found. In , researchers described the ancient marks of 3.
Measurement of N, the number of 14 C atoms currently in the sample, allows the calculation of t, the age of the sample, using the equation above. The above calculations make several assumptions, such as that the level of 14 C in the atmosphere has remained constant over time. The calculations involve several steps and include an intermediate value called the “radiocarbon age”, which is the age in “radiocarbon years” of the sample: Radiocarbon ages are still calculated using this half-life, and are known as “Conventional Radiocarbon Age”.
Since the calibration curve IntCal also reports past atmospheric 14 C concentration using this conventional age, any conventional ages calibrated against the IntCal curve will produce a correct calibrated age. When a date is quoted, the reader should be aware that if it is an uncalibrated date a term used for dates given in radiocarbon years it may differ substantially from the best estimate of the actual calendar date, both because it uses the wrong value for the half-life of 14 C, and because no correction calibration has been applied for the historical variation of 14 C in the atmosphere over time.

Abstract To obtain the historical changes of pyrogenic sources, integrated source apportionment methods, which include PAH compositions, diagnostic ratios DRs , Pb isotopic ratios, and positive matrix factorization PMF model, were developed and applied in sediments of the northern South China Sea. These methods provided a gradually clear picture of energy structural change. The phasing-out of leaded gasoline in China was captured with a sharp decrease of Pb after the mid s.
PAHs and Pb correlated well with TOC and clay content for core sediments, which was not observed for surface sediments. There was an up-core increase of high molecular PAH proportions. Furthermore, shift toward less radiogenic signatures of Pb isotopic ratios after revealed the start and growing importance of industrial sources. Biomass and coal combustion acted as major sources before , while contributions from vehicle emission soared thereafter. The integrated multi-methodologies here improved the source apportionment by reducing biases with a step-down and cross-validation perspective, which could be similarly applied to other aquatic systems.
“World’s Oldest Fossils” Might Actually Be Simple Rocks, And We’re Here For The Drama
Human Evolution Evidence Evidence of Evolution Scientists have discovered a wealth of evidence concerning human evolution , and this evidence comes in many forms. Thousands of human fossils enable researchers and students to study the changes that occurred in brain and body size, locomotion, diet, and other aspects regarding the way of life of early human species over the past 6 million years.
Millions of stone tools, figurines and paintings, footprints, and other traces of human behavior in the prehistoric record tell about where and how early humans lived and when certain technological innovations were invented.
The Oldest Fossils. Stromatolites are not only Earth’s oldest of fossils, but are intriguing in that they are our singular visual portal (except for phylogenetic determination of conserved nucleic acid sequences and some subtle molecular fossils) into deep time on earth, the emergence of life, and the evolving of the beautiful forms of life of modern time.

All of my worksheets can probably be improved upon, and definitely make changes if needed to fit with your own class and schedule. This activity assumes students know the basic principles of evolution, it is more of an “end of the unit” activity than beginning.
You will need large poster paper to set up the record. I’ve used construction paper taped together if that’s what I have laying around. Students like to pick colors too. This project is more about the “process” than the final outcome. Give a brief description of the evolutionary changes that occured in the organism.
