That guy Fiji lived up to its reputation this year, albeit without a repeat of the biblical proportions of 2012.Cloudbreak and Restaurants were on fire just before the competition began, but kept aside some serious screamers for the heats. Fiji, in all its perfection, also serves as the ultimate guardrail, resetting the standards, thereby purifying pro surfing of many of its sins (beach crowd obsession, aerial repetition, oversurfing, claim overdoses…So pay attention to the Brazilian revenge on Bali before a possible of the same fiasco in Teahupoo if they fail to learn from their Fijian mistakes.

Ever moved half way around the world to a place you've never been? This blog will be a record of mine and my family's discovery of the South Pacific as we up sticks after 21 years in the North East of England and move to Suva, Fiji.

Suva, our home for the last couple of years, was obviously chosen as the capital of Fiji because of its naturally deep harbour rather than its white sandy beaches (of which there are none) or beautiful weather (it’s in a notorious rain shadow).

Maybe you’ve seen yourself living in this crib, perched on a dramatic jungle cliff/hill, overlooking the water.

The emotions you generate during visualization feed into your why. You will receive a “bula”, along with a cheery smile, when passing a local on the way into town, or when heading anywhere for that matter.

We see the bay to our right and have an expansive view of the Pacific Ocean to our left. All well and good, but if you’re not inspired to be free you’ll turn around when things get tough.

Kelli and I are living in a place nestled on a jungle cliff, some 50 meters above the bay.

You can usually pick out the newly arrived expats by their pale skin, numerous bright red mosquito bites and slightly alarmed, confused looks. The first clue about how far away Fiji was from anywhere should have been when someone pointed out that Fiji appeared on the edges of both sides of the map hanging up in our UK dining room – literally at the end of the world, twice over.
